Starting Feb 1 the class meetings will be on Tues, 9-11:30, SST 305.

The main part of the course will be given Feb 1- March 7 by graph theory founder
Visiting Professor Frank Harary, University of New Mexico [] home page []publications []CV [] Microbiography. His 1969 book GRAPH THEORY became the 5th most cited in the mathematical research literature.

Introductory and on-line sessions before Feb 1 by Prof. White, who will make available (copies are in my mailbox SSPA 3rd floor; also copies with secretary Lisa Mikhail, SSPA 4145, as required reading before Harary's arrival, copies of the first of his books listed below.

Harary's books --

  • STRUCTURAL MODELS IN ANTHROPOLOGY (Cambridge 1983);
  • EXCHANGE IN OCEANEA: A Graph Theoretic Approach (Oxford 1991);
  • and ISLAND NETWORKS (Cambridge Structural Analysis in the Social Sciences 1996), published with anthropologist Per Hage; and
  • STRUCTURAL MODELS: a [sociological/social psychological] introduction to the theory of directed graphs (Wiley 1965), by Harary, Norman, and Cartwright
    -- are classics in the applications of structural models to the social sciences, and to the general applicability of structuralist thinking. He is one of the best writers and expositors, clear and intuitive, and an outstanding teacher.
